Maggie is an Academic Advisor, Indigenous students with Arts Indigenous Student Advising in the Faculty of Arts and is of European settler background. She completed an MA in History at UBC, and studied history and visual arts at Simon Fraser, Concordia and Capilano Universities. She joined Arts Advising in 2016 and is honoured to have the opportunity to contribute to Indigenous students’ journeys.

Maggie loves problem solving student’s circumstances and is available to chat about course planning, graduation and making the most of your time at UBC to achieve your goals.

Amanda is an academic advisor for the Arts Indigenous Student Advising Team, joining the team in August of 2021. Amanda is Dene Tha/Metis from Northern Alberta. She holds a Bachelor of Social Work with an Indigenous Specialization and a Master of Arts in Dispute Resolution from the University of Victoria.

She enjoys volunteering her time for organizations dedicated to helping others in need. In her leisure time you can find Amanda hiking, running, travelling, and having fun trying new outdoor activities. If she is not in the woods or on the road, she will be spending quality time with family and friends.

Karlene Harvey has been an academic advisor for the Arts Indigenous Student Affairs team since 2015. She is Tsilhqot’in on her mother’s side and Syilx on her father’s side. Karlene studied visual arts during her undergraduate degree at Emily Carr Institute of Arts and Design and completed a Masters of Arts in English Literature at the University of British Columbia in 2022.

Karlene is passionate about community building and fostering spaces that promote youth leadership development. She is available to discuss academic planning, goal-setting, and cultural connections both on campus and beyond.

Hometown: I am proudly representing the Eastern Woodland Territories as a Métis and Mi’kmaq woman who also grew up with Jamaican and Nigerian Descent. Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, I journeyed to Nova Scotia in my young days, and in 2019, I graced UBC with my vibrant spirit. Since 2019 I have loved every second on the West coast as a former East coast girl.  

Past & Present Involvement at UBC: Passionately driving inclusivity and diversity projects on campus, I'm on a mission to ignite change and create a more relatable space for people of color! 

When I’m not studying: Prepare to find me in my element, riding the waves at the beach, spiking it on the volleyball court and living life with my friends and family. I'm a master of creativity and love to cook up a storm, skate with style, groove to the rhythm, craft magic with my crochet skills, and unearth hidden gems while thrifting - living life to the fullest is my mantra!  I thrive on new experiences, constantly growing and connecting within the vibrant Indigenous community at UBC. My excitement knows no bounds for what this role has to offer!
