The Department of English Languge and Literatures is one of the largest undergraduate departments in the Faculty of Arts. The Department offers three Majors streams: in English Literature, in English Language, and in a combined program in Language and Literature. Each stream requires students to complete at least 30 credits of senior English courses in designated areas.

The Literature program aims for coverage in literary studies, while providing opportunities for students to work in areas of individual interest.

The Language program covers history and structure of English as well as studies in rhetoric and discourse.

The combined Language and Literature program allows students to make selections from a menu of courses in both Literature and Language.

The Department also offers an Honours program which is intended for students who have a strong interest in English language and literatures and who show promise in the study of either or both. Students may choose to focus on English literature or pursue a combination of English literature and language.

In addition to the Majors and Honours programs, students can declare a minor in English with an emphasis in English Language or English Literature. Students must complete 18 upper-level credits of English coursework for the Minor.
