UBC offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Production and Design Theatre. The program prepares students for entry-level jobs in commercial theatre or for more advanced training in graduate school.
Coursework is offered in construction, scenic art, stage lighting, properties, stage management, and design.
The program normally begins in the student’s second year of university and based on a personal interview. During the first year, students are expected to crew shows and explore the alternatives available in backstage work. During the second and third years, students are expected to specialize more intensively in their areas of interest.
Other programs include Certificates in Theatre: Design, Technology, or Advanced Technology.
Amanda Larder is a recent UBC alumna who graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in both Design and Technical Theatre in May of 2012. Her extensive involvement in theatre at UBC and in Greater Vancouver has led her to the position of Paint and Props Supervisor at Douglas College.
The Department of Theatre and Film has found itself a new “Fearless Leader” to lead the charge. Through June 2011, Stephen Heatley will be taking on the role of interim Department Head while Jerry Wasserman is on administrative leave.
