Places on Campus to Study

Libraries

Asian Library - Discreetly tucked away behind the C. K. Choi Building for the Institute of Asian Research and some really big trees, the Asian Library in the Asian Centre is quiet for studying.

Koerner Library, Level One - At the bottom of the stairs, near the washrooms, are several rooms with tables and blackboards for group studying. You can book these rooms for your next study session.  Booking sheets are at the desk on Level 2.

Woodward Library, 2nd and 3rd Floor - The Woodward Biomedical Library has study rooms located on the 2nd and 3rd Floor. The downside: these rooms can't be booked and are quite popular with science students.

Music Library - Another hidden library that’s very quiet (although you may hear the faint hum of an orchestra now and then).  At the top floor of the music building, you’re far away from any distractions.

Law Library - Inside Allard Hall, there is yet another spacious and quiet library that is rather discreet.  Its close location to Buchanan makes it easy to be on time for classes.

Education Library - This beautiful and spacious library in the Scarfe Building is fully lit with natural light via huge picture windows and offers lots of comfy couches for your studying pleasure.

Xwi7xwa Library - This secret library is tucked in the serene and lush surroundings in the First Nations Longhouse. The peaceful rushing of the mini waterfall will bring about a calm atmosphere, perfect for studying.

Irving K. Barber Learning Centre-Part library, part classrooms, part resource centre, part cafe, IKBLC has lots to offer for group, open and silent study options. Plus, the learning centre is open 24/7 during exam period! Also in IKBLC is the Chapman Learning Commons that offers computers, printers, tutors and comfy chairs.

Reading Rooms

Language Education Research Centre (LERC), Room 103 - Submerge into your studies amongst historical language education texts, children's literature and more in this Centre at Ponderosa Annex "F".  They have big tables and comfy chairs.

Architecture Reading Room, Room 9 in the Basement - Although this area is open only during the day and the afternoon, it is spacious and warm with the sun beaming through the big picture windows.  Its location in the Lasserre building, close to Buchanan, makes it a choice spot for studying.

Crane Resource Centre in Brock Hall Annex - Its close proximity to the SUB and the bus loop make it very convenient.

Coolie Verner Memorial Reading Room, Room 201 - Want to study far away from the buzz of campus?  Immerse yourself in the modest but tranquil quarters of the reading room in Ponderosa Annex "F".

Geographic Information Centre, Room 112 - Hang out with the Geography (and Atmospheric Science and Sociology…) books, journals, maps and aerial photos while you study in this quaint and quiet area.  It is newly furnished with state-of-the-art computers, armchairs and new tables and is perfect for group studying.

ICICS/Computer Science Reading Room, Room 262 - Immerse yourself into your studies in the reading room at the Institute for Computing, Information, and Cognitive Systems (ICICS).  Now that you have the option of completing a BA in Computer Science, you can sign out all their resources.

Empty Classrooms

Classrooms are great for group studying: you've got the board, the desks and the classroom atmosphere, which will hopefully induce efficient studying.  Good places to try include Buchanan (especially Block D), Henry Angus, Biology, and Hennings and Brock Hall Annex.

Lounges

International House Upper Lounge - Not only does the Upper Lounge have a nice big table to spread out on, International House always has something going on (including numerous opportunities to practice and learn different languages!).

Undergraduate Society Lounges (Multiple Locations) - Every faculty has an undergraduate society. Most of these undergraduate societies have office and social space set aside for the use of students in their faculty, such as the Arts Meekison lounge on the 1st Floor of Buchanan Block D.

Undergrad lounges - Most departments have lounges for their students (and anyone who drops by). Couches and microwaves await your arrival. Some examples in the Buchanan tower are:

2nd Floor: Department of Central, Eastern, and North European Studies: reading room
4th Floor: Department of English: underground lounge and study room
8th Floor: Department of French, Hispanic and Italian studies: lounge
10th Floor: Department of Economics and History: library

Some other lounges across campus are:

Geography lounge in the Geography Building: couches, tables, and even a phone await you in these brightly lit quarters.

Music lounge in the Music Building: renovated with new couches, microwave and Mac computers, the distant cry of an Opera singer will go undetected when you're in studying mode.

Anthropology and Sociology lounge in the Anthropology and Sociology Building: this space is on the main floor at the end of the hall and its prime location in the building is a great opportunity to meet other intellectually stimulated students.

Philosophy lounge in Buchanan E359: this space is convenient and snug to study indoors on a rainy day.

Linguistics lounge in Buchanan E259:  situated amongst all the other Linguistics offices, catch some of the knowledge permeating everywhere as you study.

Creative Writing lounge in Buchanan E466: comfy new couches are in this lounge where you can get those creative study juices going!

Political Science lounge in Buchanan C303: check out this great new space in close proximity to classes.

Informal Learning Spaces

Meekison Arts Student Space: MASS is located in Buchanan D-140 and is a social space open to all students. You'll find vending machine, computers, a water cooler and a kitchen for Arts student use.

Swing Space Building: Near Ponderosa Cafe as well as Totem Park, Place Vanier and Marine Residence, this study space has empty classrooms open and available for you to use.

Classroom Services has created a map of good study possibilities, other than classrooms and libraries.

Other Good Spots

Student Union Building (SUB) - When not being used by clubs or for meetings, the SUB's upstairs rooms are a very central and convenient location to meet.

Woodward/IRC concourse - The tables located in this big concourse space are popular with Life Sciences folks for studying and lunching.

First Nations Longhouse, Room 100 - This incredible room is elevated amongst rich wood beams and timbers.  It is also used as a ceremony hall for meetings or conferences so it is elegantly decorated and smells like a fresh forest.

Pacific Spirit Place in the Student Union Building (SUB) - This place is key for socializing, but can also be used in 'off-peak' hours before 11:00am and after 2:00pm as a quiet and central study space.

Aquatic Centre - The upstairs bleachers overhanging the pool is aptly named 'The Womb' for its combination of splashing water and chlorinated warmth. Very popular as a hang-out and as a bed-away-from-home for commuter students.

Nitobe Memorial Garden - Study with the backdrop of lush grasses and tranquil waters in the Nitobe Garden. It is widely considered as one of the most authentic Japanese Tea and Stroll Gardens in North America and as a UBC student, you get in free.

Restaurants in the Village - Dinner and a date anyone? A study date that is. Aside from noon and dinner hours, you could try studying at the restaurants in the Village. Blenz, the Only U Café, Pita Pit and Starbucks are among a few of the locales to choose from.

The Fairview Beanery - The haunt of Fairview residents, the Beanery serves great coffee and is a very quiet and mellow place to study.
