International Learning

Expand your borders and explore the world. Make your degree a global one by seeking out opportunities to learn, volunteer, and work abroad.

UBC Go Global: International Learning Programs

Imagine studying Italian art in Rome, learning Chinese in Beijing, or contributing towards a community library project in Uganda.

Through Go Global's many learning abroad programs, you can participate in numerous international learning opportunities in over 40 countries. You maintain your UBC student status and, in most cases, remain eligible for financial assistance and awards. It's affordable too -- funding from $1,000 up to $10,000 is available to students participating in one of Go Global's learning abroad programs.

  • Exchange programs allow you to learn from another perspective and take courses that may not be available at UBC. All courses successfully completed abroad (with the exception of activity courses) that appear on your transcript will transfer to UBC and can be applied towards your UBC program. Exchange students pay tuition directly to UBC, while study abroad students pay tuition directly to the partner university.
  • The International Service Learning (ISL) program helps you actively learn about your discipline through a voluntary placement in an international community development setting. ISL allows you to engage in substantial projects led by community partners around the world, connecting your academic studies with real-world experience.
  • As an undergraduate student, you are eligible to conduct research abroad at many of UBC’s 150 partner universities around the world. You can choose to conduct research abroad by participating in an established program or through self-directed studies.
  • Group Study Programs allow you to study and travel abroad with other university students in a group setting. Some group study programs offer you the chance to take existing UBC credit courses taught by UBC faculty members in an international location, while others are offered in partnership with other Canadian universities.
  • Register for web-based courses taught by some of the world’s leading institutions. The Global Issues Program (GIP) allows you to interact with students and professors from other cultures in a dynamic online learning environment, so you can get the benefits of studying abroad without ever leaving BC. Check Go Global for more information on this program, coming soon.
  • Arts Term Abroad in Global Citizenship (GCTA): Guatemala:

This program will bring together faculty and students to consider the global impact of their individual choices and to work towards a more just and sustainable future.  Trips will be arranged to visit women’s cooperatives, political leaders, traditional markets, cultural presentations and archaeological sites. Students will also have the opportunity to take part in volunteer activities while staying at a coffee cooperative. These activities will increase students’ cultural and historical knowledge of the area.  Lectures and meetings with local groups will offer other opportunities to learn about the work of other civil society organizations.

Other Study Options
