Credit Limits in Arts

As an Arts student, you are eligible to take up to 30 credits in the Winter Session; 14 in the Summer Session. You are not required to take any credits during the summer session.

Sessions

The Winter Session has two terms — Term 1: September to January, Term 2: January to April

The Summer Session has two terms — Term 1: May to June, Term 2: July to August

A 3-credit course runs over one term. A 6-credit course runs over two terms.

More than 30 Credits

Most students find balancing a full-course load (30 in winter or 12-14 in summer) challenging. As such, a credit increase is not recommended. However, there are some exceptions and there may be a time when you feel it’s feasible to add another class. At that time, you may make a request to have your credit limit temporarily increased.

If you choose to take a credit increase, you are not eligible for academic concession for issues related to the workload. If you feel that the workload is too much to handle, access resources and don’t hesitate to drop a class by the deadline.

Eligibility for a Credit Increase

First-year students and new to UBC-Vancouver students may apply for a 3 credit limit increase in their second term if, in their first term, they achieved a GPA of 70% or higher in a minimum of 15 credits with no fails. Students may apply for a 6 credit increase in their second term if, in their first term, they achieved a GPA of 80% or higher in a minimum of 15 credits with no fails. First-year students should be aware that they may register in up to 32 credits without a credit limit increase.

If you are in second, third or fourth year with an average of at least 70% in 24 credits with no fails in your previous winter session, you may be permitted to increase your credit load by 3 credits. If your average was 80%, then you may be permitted to increase your credit load by 6 credits.

Credit increases are only permitted after all students have had the opportunity to register (usually the first Monday after the last registration opening date).

Credit increases are not granted to accommodate waitlists.
